It really got you thinking. Did you know diapers aren't biodegradable for up to 500 years because of the plastics? Definitely a reason to try our Bum Genius diapers or some of the many biodegradable diapers on the market. (Seventh Generation, Nature Boy & Girl and TenderCare Plus all claim to be biodegradable). But the tricky thing is, there really doesn't seem to be 1 correct answer on how to reduce our waste regarding diapers. With Cloth diapers, you waste water - and these biodegradable diapers are still filling the landfills. I guess the answer is just to get them potty trained! LOL.

here's the link to the show - it gives a lot of other awesome info!

The Human Footprint

(image by National Geographic)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-74825385064116168782008-04-09T05:57:00.000-07:002008-04-10T08:29:22.168-07:00Britax Frontier UpdateWe just learned that the Britax Frontier will have a 9 (nine) year life span and it is FAA approved on aircraft in the harness mode!

Perks of this seat:

Harnesses to 80lbs and roughly 53" tall child

Boosters from 40-100lbs

Latch allowed in booster mode (to hold seat in)

FAA Approved

Cup holder

4 colors to choose from

9 Year life span (vs. typical 6 years... due to reinforcement)

You can pre-order one today! :) Just click on our link. A friend of mine on a carseat board I visit wrote this up. It is very concise and gives lots of great info. Thanks CarSeatJunkie for the info and taking the time to write this up! (she promises an extended harnessing and extended boostering fact sheet soon too!) And as always - these are suggestions - but each child/car/carseat is unique - please read your manual and please go to http://www.seatcheck.org/ to find a certified carseat tech near you to check your seats!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to let you know, car crashes are the #2 killer of children under 1 year of age, it is the #1 killer of children 1-14.The absolute bare minimum is 1 year AND 20lbs. What is best practice? To keep your child rear facing for as long as possible. The AAP recommends keeping your child rfing until the weight limits of your seat which is either 30, 33 or 35lbs.

Another thing, MOST states have LAWS in place that say your child HAS to be in a rear facing child restraint until 1 year AND 20lbs. So ANY dr telling you that it is okay to FF them before 1 year is WRONG.I am a Child Passenger Safety Technician and I all too often see the horrific aftermaths of children who were forward facing and were involved in a car accident.

Most recently, we reviewed a case study of a 26 month old, 26lbs child who was in the middle of the backseat, ffing, in a 5 pt harness seat. A car came into their lane and they were in a head on collision at 45mph. This little girl suffered a broken C2 vertebrae. She was the LUCKIEST child. She was in a HALO for 3 months. She had to go into temporary state custody b/c the mother couldn't care for her (due to the mother being in the hospital). Evidence shows that if she were still rear facing, she would not have sustained this life threatening injury.I have had a broken neck before, my C1 and C2 vertebra's were broken. This area controls breathing, movements, etc...Christopher Reeve is a prime example of having a broken C1 and C2 vertebra in his neck. It is NOT a nice injury and I would never wish that upon anyone...especially a child.

It breaks my heart when I hear of parents ffing their child too soon. Because of this kind of mind set that it is a "milestone" to ff your child at 1 year AND 20lbs, many MANY children are needlessly injured. When a child is in a frontal, head on 35mph crash and their car seat is NOT tethered and they are using a 5 point harness, they will go forward 32". When their seat is tethered, a child will be thrown forward 28". It is imperative that families recognize the NEED to keep their children rear facing for as long as possible.

Here are several links to support keeping your child rear facing for as long as possible:

http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;109/3/550 http://www.carseat.org/Resources/633.pdf http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/stayrearfacing.aspx
http://www.car-safety.org/rearface.html
http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbum.aspx
http://www.thecarseatlady.com/car_seats/rear-facing_seats.html
http://myangelsaliandpeanut.tripod.com/id5.html
http://momtoaliandshae.tripod.com/keepingkidssafeinthecar/
http://www.aap.org/family/carseatguide.htm
http://www.aap.org/family/1to2yrs.htm
http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/travelsafetytips.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRP7ynNI8mI
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9916868http://www.carseatsite.com/rear-face_article.htm

Here are a few crash test links to show you the difference in rear facing vs forward facing:

http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_seiten/kisitest_2002/videos/test2002/frontcrash/maxicosipriori.mpg

http://youtube.com/watch?v=rsqE-uOtMM4&mode=related&search=

Here is a crash test of a 12 month old RFing

Then, here is the SAME 12 month old FFing

I think 15 links is enough for now, but I do have MANY MANY more showing support. For those who say their children were uncomfortable rfing, your child knows nothing different. In fact, their legs bending the way they do RFing is actually comfortable to a child. It may not be for an adult. A child is usually more uncomfortable with their legs dangling over the edge or close to the edge of the seat than they are all "squished" up. ALL children go through the kicking, screaming, yelling phase b/c they are active, crawling, walking, etc and would much rather be doing that than harnessed in their seat. They also WANT to see mom or dad in the car. They can hear you, but can't "see" you. They are all phases and they will pass.

A child is TOO tall rfing when their head is 1" below the top of the SHELL of the seat OR (check your car seat manual) if you own an older Britax, it is when the tips of the ears are even with the shell of the seat rfing.

There is NO documented cases of a child's legs being broken in crashes, but there are TONS of documented cases of children with spinal injuries.42% of accidents occur in rural settings. 25% of them occur within 5 minutes of your home.

Autopsy reports have shown that children under 2 years old are at 4 times the risk of Internal Decapitation when forward facing. What is Internal Decapitation?? Wikipedia says this:Internal decapitation, atlantooccipital dislocation, describes the rare process by which the skull separates from the spinal column during severe head injury. This injury is nearly always fatal, since it usually involves nerve damage or severance of the spinal cord. Hanging relies on allowing the subject to break their neck under their own weight.

Here is a lady that actually survived Internal Decapitation

So, as you can tell, it has ZERO to do with neck STRENGTH.

I was in a side impact crash where the drunk driver was going 65-70mph and it snapped my neck--I was 20 years old.Did you know that if YOU are in a 30mph, one vehicle accident and your child weighs 20lbs, they turn into 600lbs of force. THAT is a LOT of force for a child.

Consider this: A car going 40mph would hit a tree with the same force as hitting the ground after falling off a 50 foot cliff. A person inside the car would hit the windshield (unrestrained, of course) with the same force as hitting the ground after a fall from a five-story building.Another thing to know is that when a child is RFing, the BACK of their carseat--the part that goes behind their back and head--take the brunt of the crash force. In a FF car seat, the CHILD takes the brunt of the crash force.

This shows spine development. You can see how the spine doesn't fuse together until they are quite older.

This diagram shows you how "top heavy" children are and how disproportioned they are.

I understand that it is ultimately the parent's decision, but I want to make sure that the information is out there for the parent to make the decision. No one needs to feel bad or scared or worried. Here is the information. Some crashes are unsurvivorable no matter what safety precautions have been taken. But, I WANT your children just as safe as YOU do. I really do think it's a fabulously designed seat. There are a few little things - like the middle lockoffs that take a bit to get used to - but a very comfortable, safe feeling, seat.

Here are some photos - 4.5 year old - but a peanut - 34lbs, 40". He has about 2" of growth in this seat:

And this one shows how the harness actually goes up and down without taking the cover off... so nice. And there will be some other prizes as well!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-14822833587263445442008-03-13T17:39:00.000-07:002008-03-14T06:53:18.149-07:00Online Baby ShowersLets say you're far away from family and friends and your pregnant with your first baby. Of course in an ideal world, everyone would come out to you... or you'd get to them... but either way, it's complicated and in general hard on everyone.

A great alternative is to have an online baby shower! I'll make it fun and easy!

We have two options:

Option #1: LIVE BABY SHOWER

As the mom-to-be, you simply go onto our website and register for products you want. If you need help selecting these, I am at your service!

Next - find a "host" or you can self host - but I generally like to stick to the typical etiquette of baby showers... so find a friend who wants to help you organize it.

Then we pick a date and a time... just like any other shower. You give me all your friends addresses & email addresses. I will even send out real baby invitations! They will have instructions on how to access the online party. (I use http://www.momchats.com/ -Mom Chats - Free Chat Rooms for Moms! Come see our scheduled chats, or host your own. 100% free!)

We'll send out reminders about the party via email so folks are sure to come!

The party will be just like any other baby shower... we'll chat (via online chat :) ), you'll "open" gifts (well... everyone will send you a note with the item they want to give you and why....), your guests will simply go online and "purchase" those items for you...

Option 2: POSTED BABY SHOWER

For this shower, you will receive a unique address for your shower. You will be given access to write some info about you and the baby! For this type of shower - I'll need:
-your name and mailing address
-a photo of you and your belly and maybe one with Hubby too!
-your due date (or when you plan to bring home your adopted child)
-whether you are expecting a boy or girl or it's a suprise
-your blog/website

As people purchase items off your registry, we will post them on the site, and you can respond and others can leave comments. The nice thing about this registry is you can literally hit "print" afterwards or we can even order you a bound book with the registry in it! What a great memory!

With eather of these options, because all items are being shipped to you, it will be free shipping for everyone! We'll play games, and you'll actually get to win extras for you and the baby! I promise it will be ton of fun and your friends and family will be glad they were able to celebrate some time with you before the baby comes. Of course, we'll have photos of your baby bump too! :)

If you want more information, shoot me over an email: kateo@babyonthegoathome.comUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-79321069694577991532008-03-12T19:52:00.000-07:002008-11-13T09:12:47.642-08:00Seeing Spots...

You know those horrible primary color foam "rugs" or "mats" that people buy for their kids? They are great to play on... but terrible to have to look at! Check out these mats! I think they are great! They are called Play Spots and they are distributed by Skip Hop - the manufacturers of the best diaper bags around. The "spots" are 14" x 14" tiles -and a set includes 4 tiles for $79.00. They come in girl colors, boy colors & neutrals. You could literally use these as your rug in a nursery they are so cute!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-22236694356895868882008-03-09T06:31:00.000-07:002008-03-12T20:00:09.277-07:00Confused about Baby Gear???Invite some friends over and I'll come help you sort through all the gear available!

We'll talk about what you need, what you don't need.

I'll do a safety presentation for you too - stressing carseat safety!

Plus - as a bonus - if you host, you'll get a $50 gift certificate!!!!! whoo hoo! I know I have links to some of these videos to the right... but today, I just feel like highlighting some of these... it's THAT important...

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-54438105356308312592008-03-07T08:21:00.001-08:002008-11-13T09:12:47.943-08:00The BEST baby carrier - The Ergo
When I had my first son, I started out with a Baby Bjorn... which is great... when the baby weighs 10lbs... but at 20lbs... your back just cannot handle that!

I then bought a frame carrier... it was so HUGE! It was fantastically made (Kelty) - but man... my 20lb kid felt like 40 after just 15 minutes! I just couldn't handle that carrier... it was too big.

Then I found the Ergo Carrier... its FANTASTIC! It's a light weight cloth carrier - that can literally fold up and go in your diaper bag just like a Bjorn - BUT - it can be worn on the front or on the back - and it can be worn up to 40lbs. When you are using it like a back pack, it's so much easier to carry a baby that way then in a frame carrier - you don't even notice the weight because the child is sitting so close to your back - it eliminates the whole "leaning forward" thing.

It has a head support that you snap into place if the baby falls asleep so they don't flop around. Another nice feature is that baby is "sitting" vs. "hanging" from their hips... I've heard kids with conditions like hip dysplasia prefer this type of carrier to a Kelty or born where the pressure is on the pelvis. (but of course - check with your doctor before using with a child with this type of condition).

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-72731929413274948082008-03-05T08:06:00.001-08:002008-11-13T09:12:48.597-08:00Quinny & Maxi-CosiIn a few days, we'll have the Quinny & Maxi-Cosi lines...

They have some fabulous products. For Quinny - they have the Quinny Buzz & the Quinny Zapp - both two very popular strollers. The Buzz is a full carriage setup - with an optional bassinet. It's got that "bugaboo" type style with a little more european flair... I love the colors & the fabric. It works with the Maxi Cosi Mico Infant seat too.

Then there's the Zapp... this is one of the smallest folding strollers on the market. It's really a very cool looking piece of gear. Plus - it does work with the Maxi Cosi Mico. The only bummer is that there is no recline - but its an excellent travel stroller.

The Maxi Cosi mico has some cool color patterns. Other then that it's pretty much your basic infant seat... light weight, 5 pt harness - goes to 22lbs.
The Maxi Cosi Priori Convertible carseat has some neat features. It has a recline feature for forward facing, so you can recline your toddler without uninstalling the carseat. It also rear faces to 35lbs. It will take a toddler up to 40lbs and 43" tall (gives you about 1" more in top harness height from the Britax Roundabout). A good choice for parents who plan on having more kiddos - as this one won't be the last seat you'll ever need, but if you can pass it down, then it has some nice extras that other seats don't have - and it will last you a few more months then the Britax Roundabout.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-8330437318669554782008-02-24T13:01:00.000-08:002008-02-24T13:04:06.349-08:00Mutsy 4Rider Light with Fun Seat
Here are some pics of a 4 year old (34lbs) and an almost 2 year old (29lbs) in the Mutsy 4Rider Light with the Funseat. First - it's going to come in 6 or so pretty nice color combinations. They have the girly, the sophisticated... they don't really have an awesome "boy" print - but lots of nice color combinations. It's proven that colors/choices do matter... not ultimately - but it draws people to the seat and Compass got it right I think.

Second - it harnesses up to 65lbs (like the britax marathon) and I've heard rumors of the top harness height being slightly higher then the marathon... but that will all be determined once we actually get our hands on these seats! EDIT: I've now heard that the top harness slot is 16.5 or 17" tall... which would be roughly the same as a Marathon.

Third - It's got a smart feature that LOTS of parents will love... the top part of the seat actually comes off the seat to allow for a better reclined rear facing position! Now I say "reclined" because I've heard that you can only use this feature until the child is 22lbs - then you must attach the top part... but again - I think we need to wait for the manual to come out for that one. But that's actually not a big deal - part of the reason it's hard to fit a bit britax rear facing for a 6 month old, is that you truly need a 45 degree angle... but once the child is 8 months +, there's really no need that the seat have to be that angled... and you can just adjust the install and there should be room for the extra height in the seatback.

Fourth - the cost is fantastic. It's going to fall in the under $200 range.

I do have a few questions about these seats... that I think will just have to wait for the actual manuals to get out - like rear face tethering - and harness height. I think these may end up being my nanny's carseats for the summer...well... not the girly print... First - you have to take the seat off every time you fold the stroller. Second - the fact that you have to take the fabric off the bassinet and put it onto the seat frame is sort of annoying... because I'm not likely to travel with the bassinet in the car, but it would be nice to use it for nap time. Also - the basket... like most high end strollers... is lacking. And the seat is rather smallish.

So a smart guy - who used to work in car design/development, saw a need - and started Uppababy.

The Vista has that bugaboo look. It has the seat that can face you or away from you, and a bassinet. They are separate pieces though, and can be used independently from one another. Not only are they separate, but they also come with accessories for each piece - two separate bug nets, a foot muff for the bassinet, and a rain cover that will fit both.

The bassinet comes with a mattress that has a cool side, and a warm side - and the mattress cover can be pulled off to be washed.

The Toddler seat is nice and big. The basket is just awesome. I love to take this thing grocery shopping! And it zips off in case you get spills - so you can wash it.

You can fold the stroller with the seat facing away from you - which is huge in suburbia.

The one complaint the Uppababy received was that it was wide... but they fixed that with the 2008 models - they shaved 2" off the wheels - which truly makes a huge difference.

This is a fabulous choice for tall parents too... the telescoping handle is awesome. And there is no kicking the back of the stroller because there's no rear axle.

For accessories - you can purchase a toddler step - and I have to say - it beats out the Mutsy's step! I don't' kick this one AT ALL - and you can pull it up and out of the way when you're not using it! that's such a plus!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-43334857688421577382008-01-06T07:48:00.000-08:002008-11-13T09:12:50.166-08:00Our NEW Website! It's hard to pick! But the blue is really a great color.

When the baby jogger arrives, you sort of don't believe it's a stroller. Honestly - a bouncy baby seat has a bigger box... and it's so light! But it's in there!

In order to really give you a good idea of the size, I pulled out a Mountain Buggy Single and a Mia Moda Ceilo - it will give you a good idea of how small the fold is, and how big the stroller is when it's unfolded.

When unfolded, you can see there is not a huge amount of difference in size... at least head on. the Ceilo has an obviously short back.

Tons of head room - good for a larger child - but also has the full recline for a newborn

Folded - so you can see - the ceilo is a very small fold stroller - but the mini is not far behind.

You can really see the fold here... how small it is. Great for smaller SUV cargo spaces if you have a 3rd row.

and next to the ceilo - you can see the difference

As for suspension - there is no suspension in the back wheels

but the front wheel does have a slight bounce - it can go up and down about 1/2 inch - which will ease the ride

Access to the basket is fine - not a huge basket - but enough for essentials.

and handle height - it's pretty high - here is the Mountain buggy at tallest point:

and here at a lower point... you can see the baby jogger is closest to the tall point.

Now my thoughts: this is NOT a replacement for a jogger. What is excellent for (especially with the child tray accessory and other accessories available) is a great all around town stroller. It pushes very easily, the swivel front wheel is great. It does do fine over bumpy terrain - but I wouldn't want it to be purchased as a "trail" stroller. And it's obviously not a jogger. What it is, is a jogger style version of an umbrella stroller. And for $199, you can't beat the price - it's cheaper then the full featured maclarens. It does it all... and if you know someone who's looking for a good all around stroller to register for, this is definitely a contender!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-3693714210117445762007-10-24T12:57:00.000-07:002008-11-13T09:12:50.488-08:00Mutsy Update... what a cool ride!So now that I've been playing with the Mutsy, I think it might be the single I end up keeping! I love this thing! The other day I used it with the pivot wheels... now - of course - I used it on the pavement around the block... so I used the big air tires in the mall and the little swivel ones on a walk... this is exactly opposite of what you are supposed to do. The swivel tires definitely make for a rougher ride around the block - not horrible - but the air tires are made for this type of terrain.

Now in the mall, I used the swivel tires... it's awesome. Gavin slept for 2 hours in this thing! He was all tucked in, laying flat!

But here's why I REALLY love this thing... check out this new accessory I received this week... it's called the FUN SEAT... and let me tell you - my boys are already fighting over it! It's basically a hard shell - almost like a bike seat, that attaches and has this HUGE basket off the back. It has a 5pt harness and the kiddos can "drive" while I shop! Now THAT is how I keep Gavin tied down for a little bit more without complaint! :)

The basket is awesome too... almost like a shopping cart. And I also got the beach bag, which will be awesome to pack if we have an outing where I need "stuff".

The ONLY reason Owen is tolerating letting his little brother ride - is that I also got the Mutsy toddler step. Now, I have two other toddler steps - the valco hitchhiker and the buggy board. Neither one can touch this thing in stability... it's awesome. And the fact that it has one wheel is awesome because you don't kick it.

So basically - this thing rocks. I would totally recommend this for anyone who wants a single stroller or even as a sit & stand. In fact - I haven't tried it - but I bet you could even use this step up with the bassinet attached... because of the telescoping handle.

Just a very cool stroller with lots of options! And it's solid.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-45179777143917348852007-10-15T06:24:00.000-07:002008-11-13T09:12:50.657-08:00Graco Quattro Tour Duo

Ok - so it is a beast. It's heavy and huge... BUT - I have to say - for just over $200, you do get a lot for your money. Don't even waste your time with the duoglider. At least this pushes well, and can move around a store with ease (just be careful not to run into anything... it is still very long!).

I know folks have complained that the front seat is small... and it is... but most kids don't mind. If they are bigger, chances are they are justing it as a jump seat - hence the missing belly bar... they jump in, they jump out. The back seat is very roomy - and the child has plenty of leg room.

I took it to Trader Joes and did all my grocery shopping with the two babies - they had cup holders for their sippys, and a snack spot for their treats.. and I have a HUGE basket below.

The funniest thing is, I can be pushing the $700 mutsy around... and no one comments... but with this dang thing, people can help it. It's so weird. I guess it's the handle bars and the lines on it are a bit unusual. And you can't buy one near me by walking into a store - so it is still not seen all over the place.

The fold is supper easy - and truly one handed - which you can't say for all doubles... but beware... bend with your knees... the thing is bulky and heavy to lift into a car. Technically it's a smaller fold.. but that's really only in length. What it looses in legth to the duoglider it gaines in bulk... so it's still a big double.

At the end of the day though, it's just over $200... vs. a double jogger at $400+. It fits the carseats which some people just can't live without and it folds easily. Just wish it wasn't so darn heavy! But then I guess it wouldn't be just over $200...

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5055345926702376710.post-5915733025595572032007-10-09T16:31:00.000-07:002008-11-13T09:12:51.002-08:00Mutsy Urban Rider

I just got this in. It comes to you in 3 boxes... the chassis, the seat and the bassinet. As I lift the boxes, I think - dang... this thing is HEAVY!

I open them up - the bassinet first. The fabric is beautiful. I have the charcoal black colored one - and it comes with a cream colored inside to the bassinet which is a nice contrast. It also comes with the Bassinet sheet- which is great and makes it super easy to clean. The bassinet has it's own hood and boot.

Upon putting together the stroller, I realized that Mutsy somehow forgot the extra set of swivel wheels. I contacted customer service and they got back to me in roughly 1 hour with a response that they would ship them out the next day. Great customer service.

The adjustable height handle is great. It's definitely a good stroller for a tall dad. The basket is very shallow - but I've heard they've corrected that partially for next year.

The hood has good coverage on the seat - and you can adjust the depth of the seat which is a nice function. The foot rest moves up or goes down and there is a metal plate for an older child's feet to rest on.

The seat can face you or away from you. You can fold the stroller with the seat facing either direction supposedly - but I had trouble with this - so i just took the seat off. I guess I need to just play with it a bit more.

Now - a first push and I LOVED the back swivel of the rear tires. This basically gives you a traditional pram feel without the lean down and pick up of the front tires to turn the pram. Now - the turn is not sharp - and the BIG pain is when you have to back up... it's like driving a boat trailer... you turn one direction, and the wheels go the other... so it's a little tough to use all 4 big air tires in a mall setting (which we did... and I regretted).

BUT - Mutsy fixes that - by including (most of the time!) these second set of 360 degree pivot wheels. This makes the Mutsy more "bug" like... you lock the back swivel and take off the big wheels and put on the smaller wheels. I imagine, once i get these small wheels, they will probably stay on the stroller. Walks around the block are awesome with the big wheels - but anywhere that you'd go from the car, you need those small wheels. I'll edit this posting when they come in to give feedback on the stroller with the new wheels.

As for accessories - the mutsy has them ALL! I did use a Lascal foot board - it was just too long. I think the Mutsy toddler board is the way to go with this one. Also it has this cool seat attachment you can get called a 'fun' seat. It really does look FUN! It creates almost a bike seat - like they would have on a tricycle. And it has a HUGE beach like bag off the back of it. Basically it creates a really fun seat for a toddler.

Another good accessory to get is the tray - it has a snap on tray similar to a high chair that you can put on the toddler seat - this would come in very handy for trips to the mall food court!

And they have the Mutsy Sitter - which is great! While your baby is an infant, you can use the bassinet on the stroller and use the mutsy seat inside the house!

At $699 - it is a hefty tag - but really - if you have your kids 3-4 years apart, you could almost use this and not use another stroller - if you buy the toddler board. It really has longevity. And the quality is top notch.

I like this one! ;)

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
